The name "Bay of Fires" was derived from the Aboriginal fires spotted by Captain Tobias Furneaux during his 1773 voyage. It might as well allude to the radiant orange lichen flourishing on the granite boulders along the bay. The indigenous history of the area is evident along the coastline in the form of middens, where shells and bones have been discarded.
The Bay of Fires conservation area is divided into three sections, with Ansons Bay marking the division between the southern and northern ends. The coastal route offers breathtaking vistas of the bay as you drive to The Gardens.
